引言(Highlight/Quote Box)
“In the workplace, while skill and effort are important, clearly recognizing what should and should not be done, and setting reasonable boundaries, enables one to create greater long-term value.”
Context & Action
During the process of advancing a critical project in our unit, I noticed some PMs lacking responsibility, or encountering various issues that stalled progress. Out of a commitment to ensure the project’s success, I decisively stepped in to help, taking on tasks that should have been handled by the PM.
Conflict Encounter
However, one project meeting became an unforgettable experience. During the meeting, a data requester directly questioned the PM about the project’s progress, and the PM shifted the responsibility onto me, claiming that the delay was in my hands. I understood it was a blame-shift, yet the requester, seemingly driven by jealousy, continued to interrupt and challenge my explanations in both the meeting and the work group. The feeling of being misunderstood and attacked cast a lingering shadow over me.
Confirmation & Self-Reflection
Afterwards, I confirmed with the PO, who fully understood and appreciated my efforts. Yet, this experience made me realize that in departments with unclear divisions and a tendency for blame-shifting, having a sense of boundaries is essential. Boundaries not only protect oneself from having time and energy undervalued, but also allow one to focus limited energy on the most meaningful and impactful areas.
Lessons Learned
I also learned this lesson: unconventional help is indeed valuable, but prior communication and confirmation within the organization are equally important. This is not just about efficiency, but about respect for both yourself and the team. Compared to blindly giving and becoming a “yes-person,” learning to set boundaries is the true way to demonstrate strategic thinking.
Insights & Conclusion
The insight I gained from this experience is that, in the workplace, while skill and effort are important, clearly recognizing what should and should not be done, and setting reasonable boundaries, enables one to create greater long-term value. It also allows personal growth to continue without unnecessary disruptions.
